It will be a big year for the Connecticut steampunk scene, at least in relation to what Oddball Newt brings to the table. For many years, Connecticut steampunks had one annual event to attend, the rest of the time we had to go out of state to get our steam on.
But in 2019, Oddball Newt will present 12 Months of Steampunk. That being 12 unique, and potentially annual events, for each month of the year. In addition to those 12, there will be another 12 through my Silk City Steampunk meet up group. And in addition to my own events, I also work with a group called Imagine Main Street in Manchester Connecticut, we will be going year round and I will incorporate steampunk into those events. That’s potentially 36 Connecticut based steampunk events in 2019.
The events will vary in size and scope, and will be very different from what’s been done before. We will start off with a Victorian Skate Fantasy, dressing up in steampunk and Victorian outfits to go skating in Bolton Connecticut on Jan 5th. Then it will be the 4th Stupid Cupid Steampunk Ball on Feb 23rd in Manchester Connecticut. This will be followed by the Silk City Steampunk meet up group being in a St Patrick’s Day Parade in Norwich.
Because pub crawls are growing in popularity, and so is the love of tea, I’ll be organizing a multi weekend, multi location Tea House Crawl that will take us all over Connecticut in April. In May,we return to Manchester with the Music and Maritime Mystery at the Mansion, this will have the nautical songs of Eli August and the maritime mysteries of Vince Wilson. I’ve started working with the Manchester school system to put on a makers con in June that focuses on S.T.E.A.M education. I’m calling it Steamy Tech as a homage to our Cheney Tech technical school in Manchester. July will be the 4th Steampunking in the Park photoshoot. We will be celebrating Halloween in August with the Munster’s Cheese Ball.
As I mentioned before, I work with Imagine Main Street, and in September we will have the 3rd Steam Rollin’ concert. I’m teaming up with Amy Lake of the Boston Sprockettes to bring on the Creepy Cabaret in October. In November, we head down to Norwich for the Book Fiend Readers Fest. I’m excited about all my events, but this one I’m most excited about. It’s a celebration of steampunk, sci fi and fantasy writers. Books!!!!!! And we end the year up in Torrington with the What the Dickens Christmas Gala.
And in between, there will be the Silk City Steampunk meet ups, mini concerts, crafting nights and vending. Anyone interested in learning more about these events and meet up opportunities can go to Oddball Newt, give the page a like, and join the Silk City Steampunk meetup group. The Connecticut steampunk scene is going to have plenty to do this year. If you miss one, there’s always one the next month. And the month after that. And the month after that. I’m really excited to be able to bring these to old and new steampunk enthusiasts. Be there or be a square shaped cog.
